วัดศรีสุพรรณ สร้างในปี พ.ศ. 2043 ในสมัยของพระเมืองแก้ว กษัตริย์นครเชียงใหม่ องค์ที่ 11 ในราชวงค์มังราย

พระเมืองแก้ว หรือ พระเจ้าศิริธรรมจักรพรรดิ หรือ พญาแก้ว และอีกหลายๆพระนามของพระองค์ เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์พระองค์ที่ 11 ในราชวงศ์เม็งราย แห่งอาณาจักรล้านนา ครองราชย์ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2038 - 2068 ทรงเป็นพระปนัดดา (หลานปู่) ของพระเจ้าติโลกราช / พระเจ้าศิริธรรมจักรพรรดิ

"พระอุโบสถเงิน แห่งแรกของโลก" เริ่มก่อสร้างปี พ.ศ. 2547 เนื่องในวโรกาสพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 9 ทรงมีพระชนมายุครบ 80 พรรษา ในปี พ.ศ.2550 ซึ่งนำโดยพระครูพิทักษ์สุทธิคุณ เจ้าอาวาสวัดศรีสุพรรณ และ คณะกรรมการวัด มีมติให้ดำเนินการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์พระอุโบสถซึ่งขณะนั้นทรุดโทรมมาก แต่เนื่องจากชาวบ้านชุมชนวัวลายนี้ มีฝีมือในการทำเครื่องเงิน จึงร่วมกันสร้างพระอุโบสถเงิน (เงินผสมดีบุก) ทั้งหลัง รวมทั้งข้างใน และ ข้างนอกเป็นเงินทั้งหมด เพื่อเป็น "พระอุโบสถเงิน หลังแรกของโลก" กำหนดระยะเวลาสร้างทั้งหมด 9 ปี คาดว่างบประมาณที่จะต้องใช้ถึง 25 ล้านบาท
